About candidate

About you
More than thirty years of professional experience • Subject Matter Expert for both Management and Unions • Regional Director for 120,000-member Labor Union • Labor and Employee Relations Director for 3,600 employee state government agency • Senior Advisor to Executive Directors for HR matters including Employee & Labor Relations, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) administration, employment and policy development • Trainer and adviser to central office and field management on all facets of collective bargaining agreement administration • First chair in grievance arbitration • Senior HR policy author • Chairperson for State of Ohio Labor-Management steering committee.
What are you looking for in a new role?
I am looking for an opportunity to put my expertise in labor relations to work in a positive and cooperative relationship with employee organizations. I am particularly looking for a remote role in which I can do this. I enjoy the opportunity to be creative in my work and develop new solutions to old problems.
What you are interested in working with us?
In reading your posting and researching the organization's background, it appears to me that there are similar motivating interests. Positivity, collaboration and commitment to relationships appear to be organizational and personal values shared by me and your company. I would like to develop a better understanding of those ideas with further conversation.
What has been most challenging experience in a past role?
The removal of people from their jobs for cause is something that has to be done in my work. The removal of people from their jobs for no, or very little cause of their own is more challenging and difficult. However, when the situation demands it, I am experienced in handling these situations professionally and with empathy.

Greetings,

Please accept my attached resume for consideration in your search for a Remote Labor Relations Analyst.  I am very confident that my career experience and qualifications make me an excellent Professional to serve in this capacity.  Currently I serve as Assistant Director of Labor and Employee Relations for the University of Cincinnati, where I negotiate and manage nine collective bargaining agreements, administer exempt employee matters, and create and execute training programs for managers on successful Labor and Employee Relations practices.  Prior to that I served as Regional Director and Labor Relations Consultant for the Ohio Education Association, an organization of over 100,000 public school educators and service personnel.  Previously I served as Director of Operations for Organizing for America, wherein I was the Chief Operating Officer in the state of Ohio for the re-election of President Barack Obama.  Prior to that I served as Labor and Employee Relations Director for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, a 3,600 employee state agency in the administration of Ohio Governor Ted Strickland.  I have more than 25 years of experience in labor relations, employee relations, and in public and private sector HR administration.

In my career path I’ve been called upon to build high-functioning coalitions with people from very disparate organizations and backgrounds.  One important thing I’ve learned in all this time is that the foundation for positive interactions begins with identifying the motivating interest of that person or organization.  Understanding why one does what they do is crucial to translating your message into terms that will resonate with the internal and individual tuning fork that everyone has.  And even when your path will diverge with someone and you follow your own organizational mission, if you’ve listened to that person and they believe that they’ve been heard, that divergence will not be received as a personal slight but rather as a professional difference.

I believe that a Professional like myself, having come from rank-and-file to senior management, and serving at the signature level on both sides of the bargaining table, brings a measure of built-in credibility and an understanding of motivating interests that is not commonly found. This can go a long way to further positive interactions with staff and help achieve organizational goals.  I look forward to speaking with you about your needs in this search and will be happy to provide several letters of recommendation if you desire.  Please consider me to be at your disposal and feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Bret Benack
